University of Maryland School of Social Work Continuing Education

This two-part module will orient participants to leadership frameworks, practices, and competencies that span the fields of business, non-profit management, and community practice. Continuing education credits are offered through the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for social workers, and are also accepted by the Maryland Counseling and Psychology Board and are guaranteed in Maryland and Washington D.C. Human-Centered Leadership in Health and Human Services Certificate Program

January – December 2024

This continuing education certificate program, offered by the University of Maryland School of Social Work and designed by prominent social work leadership researchers, focuses on empowering women and women of color to address the current gender imbalance and step into more formal leadership roles in health and human services. Applications for enrollment are open now; the year-long cohort program starts in January 2024. Learn more and apply.

I am excited to be teaching the first two workshops, as well as the last workshop, for the 2024 cohort; see below for workshop descriptions.

Individual Mindful Leadership (3 hours)

In this workshop, participants will learn about the Individual Mindful Leadership|Mindful Growth (ML|MG) Model, developed by Dr. Colby Peters. Based on her own research and scientific research in multiple disciplines, this model guides the development of self-leadership skills, critical for effective leadership in relational and systems contexts. Participants will have the opportunity to use their results from the Human-Centered Leadership Certificate Assessment to explore areas of potential development in the five sections of the Individual ML|MG Model: self-worth, self-care, mindfulness, principles, and mindful growth. This workshop supports the first, second, and fourth pillars of the Health and Human Services Human-Centered Leadership Certificate: 1) Mindful and positive self-awareness, 2) Authenticity and meaning, and 4) Agility and Risk-taking.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the research behind and importance of the five sections of the Individual ML|MG Model to effective Human-Centered Leadership.
  • Participants will be able to identify self-leadership development goals based on areas of interest from the Individual ML|MG assessment.
  • Participants will learn how to develop a personal leadership mission, vision, and set of principles for use throughout the Human-Centered Leadership Certificate program.

Relational Mindful Leadership (3 hours)

In this workshop, participants will learn about the Relational Mindful Leadership|Mindful Growth (ML|MG) Model, developed by Dr. Colby Peters. Based on her own research and extensive scientific research in multiple disciplines, this model guides the development of relational leadership skills from a foundation of effective self-leadership, both critical for effective leadership in systems. Participants will have the opportunity to use their results from the Human-Centered Leadership Certificate Assessment to explore areas of potential development in three sections of the Relational ML|MG Model: unconditional respect, relational boundaries, and empowering practices. This workshop supports the first and third pillar of the Health and Human Services Human-Centered Leadership Certificate: 1) Mindful and positive self-awareness and 3) Relational equity and inclusiveness.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the research behind and importance of the three sections of the Relational ML|MG Model to effective Human-Centered Leadership.
  • Participants will be able to identify relational leadership development goals based on areas of interest from the Relational ML|MG assessment.
  • Participants will learn how to use their personal leadership mission, vision, and principles to navigate relational conflict.

Using Mindfulness to Lead with Resilience and Restoration (3 hours)

In this workshop, participants will learn about Dr. Peters’ Mindfulness Model, based on her extensive review of historical writings and current scientific research. Dr. Peters will describe the components of the model, the supporting research, and practical applications in support of the fifth pillar of the Human Services Human-Centered Leadership Certificate: Resilience and restoration. Participants will learn about the role of mindfulness in creating flow and incorporating periods of rest and recovery in personal and professional contexts and why these periods are critical to effective Human-Centered Leadership.

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the components of the Mindfulness Model and the research behind each component.
  • Participants will be able to explain why maintaining flow and periods of rest and recovery are critical to practicing effective Human-Centered leadership.
  • Participants will be able to apply the Mindfulness Model to navigate stressful situations while maintaining flow and honoring their own and others’ need for rest and recovery.

Continuing education credits are offered through the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for social workers, and are also accepted by the Maryland Counseling and Psychology Board and are guaranteed in Maryland and Washington D.C. Most states will accept these credits because University of Maryland is an accredited university, but please check with your state’s board first.
